Coir is a 100% natural grow and flowering medium. Coconut Coir is colonized with trichoderma bacteria which protects roots and stimulates root growth. It is extremely difficult to over water coir due to it’s perfect air to water ratio, plant roots thrive in this environment, coir has a high cation exchange, meaning it can store unused minerals to be released to the plant as and when it requires it. Coir is available in many forms, most common is coco peat which has the appearance and texture of soil but contains no mineral content.

It’s best that you start with your lamp placed about 20 inches above the top of the plant to avoid drying your plant. After that, you can start decreasing the height daily until you reach the distance you like.
Plant your organic plants as close together as you can without crowding them. When the organic plants grow thick enough, the leaves will shade out weeds, which also need sunlight to flourish. Practice a little bit of hand-weeding every day. Many gardeners find weeding to be relaxing and oddly therapeutic. Regular weeding keeps weeds small and prevents large ones from setting seeds, creating hundreds of new weed problems in your organic garden layout.

Measuring Cups & Spoons “In Kenya, the Association for Better Land Husbandry found that the farmers who constructed double-dug beds in their gardens could produce enough vegetables to see them through the hungry dry season. According to a review of 26 communities, 75% of the households are now free from hunger during the year, and the proportion of households buying food fell from 85% to 11%.” — Alternative Models (or Approaches) to Food Production, by Jules Pretty and Rachel Hime, University of Essex, UK, Jean Marc von der Weid, AS-PTA, Brazil, October 2001
Want to grow indoors? You’re going to need a grow light — this adds a considerable amount of cost but it may be the only option for those of you in very cold regions.
Choosing the Best Trenching Shovel Test your watering cycle out before getting started with plants. Popular watering cycles use on/off times of 15 minutes and onwards. Try to avoid an off period of more than half an hour. If using a slow drip system, you can set long watering times (say five hours or more) with 15- to 30-minute off intervals.

I haven’t been able to find studies that settle the issue one way or the other, but I did come across a 1994 industry-commissioned study that concluded that hydroponic peppers and tomatoes were more nutritious – and more flavorful – than the same varieties grown organically and grown by conventional methods. That doesn’t square with my own experience with hydroponic tomatoes. While growers often say they breed their tomatoes for flavor, I’ve found that while the fruit often looks attractive, the flavor is usually insipid, nothing like that of the best organic or homegrown tomatoes. Nothing beats the burst of summer flavor that comes with tomatoes sun-ripened in your own garden or in the fields of a good, local organic farmer.

7 Nutrient solutions The plant roots can grow so long that they can prevent the water and solution from going al the way up to the grow cups. Also, long and thick roots can clog the system. This is why you need to trim the roots every once in a while. Trim them to be short enough so they don’t touch the point where the solution goes into the cup holder.
If you’ve got a paper bag and a rubber band, you’ve got an almost-free way to store seeds. Put a paper bag over a healthy, dried seedhead, use a rubber band to secure it, and then snip the stem. Store the bag in a cool, dry place. When you’re ready to collect the seeds, gently shake the bag to release the dried seeds from the seedhead.

Computers Wood fibre, produced from steam friction of wood, is a very efficient organic substrate for hydroponics. It has the advantage that it keeps its structure for a very long time. Wood wool (i.e. wood slivers) have been used since the earliest days of the hydroponics research.[8] However, more recent research suggests that wood fibre may have detrimental effects on “plant growth regulators”.[34][non-primary source needed]

Top Drip Systems are the most common hydroponics system. In a drip system, the nutrient solution is held in a reservoir and is pumped through tubing to the base of potted plants. The excess solution is then released through the hole in the bottom of the pot and returned to the reservoir. This process should be repeated 2-4 times a day.

The Ebb and Flow is the classic hydroponic system. It can accommodate pots of any size and is easy to build yourself. Potted plants are arranged onto a drain table which is then filled with 2-3 inches of water and nutrient solution which is pumped into the drain table. The solution is then brought in through the hole in the bottom of the pots. After soaking for a few minutes, the reservoir is drained. This should be repeated 2-4 times a day.
